Caption: Fingerprints. A forensics officer dusting an object for fingerprints. Fingerprints are made by the patterns of ridges in the skin of the tips of the fingers. Prints of these patterns can be left behind on objects we touch due to oils and sweat on the skin. Various techniques, such as brushing with very fine powders, allow forensics officers to make these 'latent' prints visible. As fingerprints are unique to the individual, the presence of fingerprints can link a suspect to a crime scene. Photographed in the Federal Drug Control Committee in Novosibirsk, Russia.
