Caption: Childhood rickets. Coloured frontal X-ray of the legs of a 3-year-old child with rickets. Rickets (Osteomalacia) occurs predominantly in children and is caused by a deficiency in vitamin D or calcium and from lack of exposure to sunlight. It results in a weakening of the bones, leading to deformities such as bowlegs. Other deformities can include enlarged skull, chest deformities, and enlargement of the liver and spleen.
