Caption: Tourette's treatment, coloured X-ray. Profile view of the skull of a 25-year-old man with Tourette's syndrome, showing electrodes implanted in his brain. Tourette's is an inherited disorder that starts in childhood and is characterised by multiple physical (motor) tics and at least one vocal (phonic) tic. In about half the cases the sufferer involuntarily uses obscene speech (coprolalia). The electrodes seen here stimulate the thalamus in an effort to improve the symptoms.
