Caption: Ichthyosaurus fossil skull. This artwork is from the Richard Owen collection, held at the Natural History Museum, London, UK. It is illustration 117a, annotated by the British naturalist William Clift (1775-1849) as number 4. It is a profile of 'Mr Johnson's Fossil found at Lyme', referring to the Jurassic coast at Lyme Regis. The British anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen (1804-1892) was the founder and first director of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. Ichthyosaurs were a type of marine reptile from the Mesozoic era.
