Caption: Jean Taisnier (1508-1562), Belgian mathematician. Taisnier published on a wide range of topics, including the physics of falling bodies, magnetism, perpetual motion, astronomy, and mathematics. The Latin inscription states that he is aged 53 here, and the year of 1562 is given at lower left. This woodcut is from Taisnier's work 'Opus mathematicum' (1562). The Latin phrase 'tempora, tempore, tempera' is at centre left. A geometry tool is at lower centre, and an hour-glass and an armillary sphere are in the background.
