Caption: Joseph Justus Scaliger (1540-1609), French religious scholar. His major works were on historical criticism. He published editions of classical history, notably 'De emendatione temporum' (1583). The circular inscription gives the Latin form of Scaliger's name, and 'Veronensis' refers to his family's claim to be descended from the Lords of Verona. This copy of this artwork is from 'Histoire de l'Universite de Geneve' (1900) by Charles Borgeaud. The original artwork dates from at least 1669 when this engraving based on a work by Theodor de Bry (1528-1598) was published in 'Bibliotheca Chalcographica'.
