Caption: Isaac Casaubon (1559-1614), French classical scholar and philologist. Casaubon published a wide range of Latin and Greek texts with accompanying commentary. He was considered one of the most learned men of his day. The circular inscription gives the Latin form of his name and the Latin inscription at bottom is a poem attributed to the Dutch orator and poet Petrus Francius (1645-1704). This copy of this artwork is from 'Histoire de l'Universite de Geneve' (1900) by Charles Borgeaud. The original is from 1709 and is an engraving by Pieter Stevens van Gunst of a portrait by the Dutch painter Pieter van der Werff (1665-1722).
