Caption: Dabigatran etexilate drug molecule. This anticoagulant drug has the molecular formula C34.H41.N7.O5. The atoms (rods) are colour-coded: carbon (purple), hydrogen (white), nitrogen (pink), oxygen (yellow). This is converted in the body to dabigatran (C25.H25.N7.O3). Dabigatran (trademarked Pradaxa) can be used as an alternative to drugs such as warfarin and heparin. Typical uses are to prevent clots during surgery and in strokes. Developed by multinational German pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, it was approved in Europe and the USA in 2008 and 2010.
