Caption: Old word hookworm (Ancylostoma duodenale), coloured light micrograph. Blood (black) can be seen in the worm's gut. This is a nematode worm that is a parasite of the small intestines of cats, dogs and humans. Human infestation begins with larvae penetrating the skin, usually by burrowing into the feet and entering the bloodstream. It is one of the commonest causes of hookworm infestation in humans, particularly in sub-tropical regions such as North Africa and India.
