Caption: Photograph of the 21 cubic metres cavity for the IMB proton decay experiment in the Morton salt mine near Cleveland, Ohio, at the completion of excavation in 1981 and before it was lined with two high-density polyethylene bladders & filled with ultrapure water. The bulldozer at the bottom of the ramp indicates the scale. The I-beams at the top are for support of a catwalk to be built later, & an elephant trunk bringing in fresh air can be seen hanging down from the furthest I-beam. (1981)
