Gastroenterology ward. Nurse tending to the stoma of a patient on the gastroenterology ward of a hospital. A stoma is a surgically created opening that connects a portion of the patient's intestines to the outside environment through an incision in their abdomen. Stomata are often used when portions of bowel have had to be removed due to various diseases. The intestinal contents pass out through the stoma and into an ostomy bag attached to the person's skin around the stoma.
