Caption: Metal displacement reaction. Image 2 of 2. Magnesium ribbon reacted with copper sulphate (CuSO4) in a displacement reaction. Over time the magnesium (Mg), which is a more reactive metal than copper (Cu), has displaced (replaced) the copper. It has formed a colourless solution of magnesium sulphate (MgSO4). The copper that has been displaced out of solution has crystallized as a solid and sunk (brown, bottom centre). The formula for this reaction is: Mg + CuSO4 ---> MgSO4 + Cu.
