Caption: Fossil fish. Illustration depicting a fossil of Gyroptychium agassizi, a lobe-finned fish that lived in the Devonian period 416-359 million years ago. G. agassizi was a fast swimming riverine predator that grew to about 30cm in length. When first described it was given the name Diplopterus borealis, but was later reclassified. This illustration was first published in 'Monographie des poissons fossils du Vieux Gres Rouge' by Louis Agassiz, printed at Neuchatel in 1844.
