Caption: Structure of a whirlwind. Diagram showing the wind patterns in a whirlwind or tornado. The author suggests a nested helical structure, in which air circulates anti-clockwise at the edges whilst rising, then descends in an inner rotating core. The shapes of the wind pattern around the storm is also depicted. This was first published in 'Whirlwinds and Dust Storms of India' by P. Baddeley in 1860.
