The Alps. Illustration of an alpine valley. In the centre foreground are two geologists on an expedition. This illustration first appeared in Hutton's Theory of the Earth, published at Edinburgh in 1785. Hutton considered the Alps and excellent example of the folding of rocks due to geological forces. It was almost 200 years before the cause of this folding, plate tectonics, was established.
