Caption: The Alps. Illustration of part of the Alps, the mountain range in central Europe. Here several peaks are seen with glaciers flowing down from large snow fields. This illustration first appeared in Hutton's Theory of the Earth, published at Edinburgh in 1785. Hutton considered the Alps and excellent example of the folding of rocks due to geological forces. It was almost 200 years before the cause of this folding, plate tectonics, was established.
