Caption: Cardiac muscle, light micrograph. The heart largely consists of fibres (red) of cardiac muscle (the myocardium) that contract to pump blood around the heart. This is a longitudinal section through the myofibrils, with the round areas being the cell nuclei, and the dark bands being intercalated discs. The stain used is trichrome blue.
