Caption: Animation of a star exploding as a supernova, and then its companion star and the black hole produced in the supernova racing through space. A supernova is the explosive death of a massive star, and it is thought the collapse of the star's core during the event could create a black hole. This animation is based on observations of the black hole GRO J1655-40, which was studied between 1996 and 2001, and was found to be moving through the galaxy with its companion star some four times faster than the velocity of neighbouring stars. The most likely explanation is that the supernova that formed the black hole also kicked the hole and its companion star out of position and away from the supernova remnant.
