Caption: Solar flare, June 2011. This Earth-directed solar flare (white area lower centre) was unleashed from sunspot 1158. It was an M6.6-category (medium) X-ray irradiance magnitude blast and was the strongest flare of the year so far. Image obtained by the Solar Dynamics Observatory on 13th February 2011.
