Caption: Close-up of a velvet worm (Peripatus sp.) walking along a branch. A member of the phylum Onychophora, the Peripatus has features of both arthropods and annelids. It is a member of an ancient lineage, having existed essentially unchanged for more than 500 million years. It is a nocturnal carnivore that captures insects and other prey by squirting them with sticky slime. They have surprisingly complex social interactions, and bear live young. They are found in rainforests and other humid environments worldwide, although they are inconspicuous. The largest species may reach a length of around 20 centimetres. Filmed in the Ecuadorian Amazon rainforest.
