Caption: Belka (left) and Strelka (right), Soviet space dogs, in their harnesses in their spacecraft. Belka and Strelka were launched into orbit on 19 August 1960 in the Sputnik 5 spacecraft (also called Korabl-Sputnik 2). They spent a day in orbit before returning to Earth. This was the second flight to send animals into space, and the first flight in which the passengers survived (after Laika died in orbit in November 1957). Belka and Strelka's mission helped pave the way for the first manned spaceflight by Yuri Gagarin the following year.
