Caption: Capsule being attached to the Sputnik-5 rocket on 19th August 1960. It was carrying the Soviet space dogs Belka and Strelka. They spent 25 hours in space, orbiting the Earth 17 times before returning safely. They were the first animals to survive orbital flight, and the research paved the way for Yuri Gaagarin's first human spaceflight in April 1961.
