Caption: Five peas in a pod. The garden pea, Pisum sativum, is a very important legume grain crop, and frozen peas are the most commonly eaten frozen vegetable. The plant is particularly well suited to processing before the peas ( its seeds ) are fully mature, as it is self-pollinated and can be bred to show synchronous flowering over a very short time period. This commercially exploited uniformity and synchronicity of seed development in the pea represents a modern agriculture twist to the expression, “as alike as two peas in a pod”.
