Caption: Serrin lamp. Invented in the 1850s, this was the first lamp design produced by the French engineer Victor Serrin (1829-1905). This electric arc lamp was used in lighthouses in the UK and France, including the lighthouse at La Heve. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
