Caption: Munchenstein rail disaster. This rail disaster, the worst in the history of Switzerland, took place on 14 June 1891. The failure of the railway bridge over the River Birs, near the village of Munchenstein, in northern Switzerland, led to several carriages of a crowded passenger train falling into the water below. Over 70 people were killed. Artwork from the eighth volume (second period of 1891) of the French popular science weekly 'La Science Illustree'.
