Caption: Weather balloon at Kew Observatory, Old Deer Park, Richmond, London, UK. This is a Mark XV tethered balloon, designed to carry instruments aloft and then be reeled back in again. The main observatory building is in the background. Kew Observatory, established in 1769, was an astronomical and geophysical observatory. It included equipment operated by the Met Office, the UK's national weather monitoring and forecasting service. Magnetic and meteorological observations were carried out here until 1980, when the Met Office facilities were relocated. Photographed in June 1965.
