Caption: Pollution. The area of the Etang de Berre, Bouches-du-Rhine, in southern France, is a densely populated industrial region where a range of oil and chemical industries have existed for over 50 years. This means the air is prone to high levels of many atmospheric pollutants, including sulphur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide and dioxide, carbon monoxide and dioxide, heavy metals – arsenic, cadmium, nickel and lead - organic chemical compounds like benzene, and policyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This makes the area one of the most polluted in France.
