Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Solvent-based extraction. Student using a separating funnel to separate two liquids, one clear and one yellow. The immiscible liquids are currently being mixed (with a stopper in one end of the separating funnel). Following this mixing, the separating funnel will be clamped in an upright position and left to stand. Once the layers have settled the valve will be opened to allow the lower layer (the clear liquid) to drain into the beaker. This is often done to separate a mixture of reaction products in organic and aqueous (water-based) solvents, a process called extraction.
