Caption: Planck and Herschel spacecraft launch. ESA (european Space Agency) Ariane 5 rocket carrying the Planck and Herschel space observatories launching from the Guiana Space Centre, French Guiana, on 14th May 2009. Planck will study the Cosmic Microwave Background, the radiation left over from the Big Bang. Herschel will study the formation of galaxies and stars, and investigate the composition of the atmosphere of extrasolar planets, and of interstellar molecular clouds.
