Willemoes-Suhm memorial. Tablet erected to the memory of the German naturalist Rudolf von Willemoes-Suhm (1847-1875), who died during the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872-1876). This scientific expedition, organised by the Royal Society, spent four years surveying the world's oceans. Willemoes-Suhm died on 13 September 1875, during the journey from Hawaii to Tahiti, and was buried at sea. This tablet was erected in his birthplace in Germany, by those who had been his scientific colleagues on the expedition. The memorial tablet was later moved to the family burial plot in Segeberg, Germany.
