Caption: Gigantopithecus model jaw. The central bit of this model is a fossil fragment, with the rest of the jaw being a reconstruction. This fossil is from the species Gigantopithecus blacki. Gigantopithecus is a genus of extinct primates, the largest ever known to have existed. The fossils date from around 1 million years ago, and Gigantopithecus co-existed with early humans and ancestral human species.
