Caption: Displacement reaction. Image 1 of 2. Hand about to add zinc (Zn) metal to an aqueous solution (blue) of copper (II) sulphate (CuSO4). The zinc will react with the solution to form zinc sulphate, depositing solid copper metal as zinc ions replace the dissolved copper ions. This is known as a displacement or substitution reaction. The zinc is said to be more reactive than copper, and can be placed above it in a reactivity series. For the completed reaction, see A500/363.
