Caption: Female cosmonauts on an ice rink. From left to right: Tatiana Pitskhelauri (born 1941), Irina Solovyeva (born 1937), Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937) and Valentina Ponomaryova (born 1933). These are four of the five women who were chosen by Moscow to join the cosmonaut training program on 12th March 1962. The fifth was Zhanna Yorkina. Tereshkova was the only one of the five to actually fly and was the first woman in space, on the Vostok 6 mission of 16-19 June 1963. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, on 12th December 1970.
