Caption: Valentina Tereshkova and Samantah Smith. Cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937) with American schoolgirl Samantha Reed Smith. Tereshkova was the first woman in space, making her only flight on the Vostok 6 mission of 16-19 June 1963. Smith was invited to the USSR at the invitation of Yuri Andropov, CPSU general secretary, after she wrote to him. She attracted extensive media attention in both countries as a Goodwill Ambassador , and became known as America's Youngest Ambassador participating in peacemaking activities in Japan. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, on 7th July 1983.
