Caption: Cosmonaut Valentina Ponomaryova (born 1933). Ponomaryova was one of the five women who were chosen by Moscow to join the cosmonaut training program on 12th March 1962. She was the back-up woman of Valentina Tereshkova, who was the only one of the five to actually fly and was the first woman in space, on the Vostok 6 mission of 16-19 June 1963. Photographed in Moscow, Russia, on 6th May 1963.
