Caption: Cosmonaut Tereshkova at a meeting. Valentina Tereshkova (born 1937, centre) was the first woman in space, making her only flight on the Vostok 6 mission of 16-19 June 1963. She was also Chairman of the Soviet Women's Committee. Here she is speaking at a meeting held to mark the Week of Disarmament.
