Caption: Gentoo penguins (Pygoscelis papua) tending chicks on nests built up from pebbles and loose rocks. This penguin lays two eggs and the parents alternate feeding trips with care for the chicks. The chicks remain in the nest for about 30 days, and then moult and go to sea at 80 to 100 days. In the background is the Scandinavian-built ice-breaker Akademik Sergey Vavilov, originally built for Russian science research. It is now mostly used for tourism in the Antarctic and the Arctic. Photographed on Petermann Island, the Lemaire Channel, the Antarctic Peninsula.
