Caption: The discovery of the Einsisheim meteorite (Alsace) in 1492. Woodcut with early handcolouring from a page of Conrad Lycosthenes' (Chronicle of Prodigies and Omens) - "Prodigiorum ac Ostentorum Chronicon" Published Hendricus Petri, Basel, 1557. The picture shows the discovery of the Ensisheim meteorite on the 7th November 1492. A loud explosion was heard and a boy took townsfolk to a deep hole in a field where the 280 pound meteorite was discovered and retrieved. What remains of this earliest recorded and retrieved fall is still on display in Einsisheim today.
