Caption: Crested porcupine (Hystrix cristata). Woodcut with old colouring. Gesner "Icones Animalium" publ. Christof Froschover, Zurich, 1560. Of Gesner's many woodcuts this is one of the more accurate. It was drawn "ad vivum" from a porcupine show around by a beggar in Zurich as a curiosity in Gesner's time.
