Caption: Allen F. Gardiner 1794-1851, 'martyred' British missionary who was inspired by the Fuegians that were brought back on the Beagle, and by the further accounts of Fitzroy and Darwin, to bring Christianity to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. Portrait frontis from "A Memoir of Allen F. Gardiner" by John Marsh, published by James Nisbett 1851. All his attempts to reach the Indians failed, and ultimately he and his team starved to death on a Patagonian beach. But his death inspired the Patagonian missionary society to be active there until the end of the 19th century, an effort to which Darwin was an early contributor. Today the Fuegians as a people are extinct, largely due to European diseases and aggressive early colonial settlement policies, as well as cultural introgression.
