Caption: Steel engraving by C.Cook, printed by William Mackenzie, the Scottish printer and publisher in 1899. It appears in James Taylor's "The Victorian Empire" and is based on the 1879 Photograph by Elliot and Fry. According to Gene Kritsky, who maintains an archive of Darwin photographs, the 1879 photograph was from a session at his home, Down House. After Darwin's death in 1882 this version was sold mounted by Elliot and Fry in memoriam, the photo noted as circa 1880. Darwin was famously not keen on having his photograph taken by strangers.
