Caption: From Flammarion's "Le Monde avant la Creation de l'Homme". This is the first dinosaur (Iguanodon) reconstruction to put them in modern context to reveal their size. In this case getting a meal from a fifth floor Parisian balcony. Such representations have become a staple of science fiction and fantasy writers ever since. The picture was perhaps stimulated by the discovery in 1878 of the 38 Belgium Bernissart Iguanodons in a coal mine - which were reconstructed for display in 1882. These fossils revealed that the horn of the iguanodon, first postulated by Gideon Mantell half a century before, was infact a modified thumb spike. Flammarion's illustrators left them on the nose in any case.
