Caption: Cave man protects his mate and child from a marauding cave bear. He wields a hafted axe (from a later period) before a trophy skull of irish elk. Vivid colour lithograph from "Dr. Schubert's Naturgeschichte - Geologie, Mineralreich, Palaontologie". Published in Stuttgart by J.F. Shreiber. The palaeontology section by Dr. Friedrich Rolle. The realisation that man was present among the extinct animals of pre-history was still quite fresh at the end of the 19th century when this was printed. German lithographers dominated colour lithography with their high volume productions such as this book for Children.
