Caption: Sabre-toothed cat's fossil skull. The sabre-toothed cats were extinct carnivores forming the subfamily Machairodontinae. They were found in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America, and lived from the Eocene epoch (38 million years ago) until the end of the Pleistocene epoch (10,000 years ago). A sabre-toothed cat could open its jaw very wide, and is thought to have used its huge upper canine teeth (up to 20 centimetres long) to stab and slash its prey.
