Caption: Prehistoric shamanism. Artwork of a shaman engaging in a ritual dance in front of a cave painting of a bison (upper left). This shaman is in the Altamira Cave, Spain, one of the locations where evidence has been found for prehistoric shamanism. It is thought that the cave was inhabited during two periods of the Upper Paleolithic part of the Stone Age. One period was 18,500 years ago, and another was around 15,000 years ago. The cave was discovered in 1879.
