Caption: Hohlenstein lion-headed figurine. Artwork of a prehistoric lion-headed ivory sculpture, sometimes known as the 'lion man'. It was found in 1939, in the Stadel cave in the Hohlenstein Mountain of the German Alps. Thought to be the oldest surviving animal-shaped sculpture in the world, it may represent a prehistoric deity and dates from around 32,000 years ago. Identified with the Aurignacian culture, it is 30 centimetres tall and carved from mammoth ivory.
