Caption: Vostok spaceflights. Historical Soviet artwork of cosmonauts Andrian Nikolayev (1929-2004) and Pavel Popovich (1930-2009), commemorating the Vostok 3 (11-15 August 1962) and Vostok 4 (12-15 August 1962) spaceflights. Vostok 3 and Vostok 4 were launched a day apart on trajectories that brought the spacecraft within approximately 6.5 km (4.0 mi) of one another. The cosmonauts onboard the two capsules communicated with each other via radio, making this the first ship-to-ship communications in space.
