Caption: Ariane 5 rockets, artwork. These are the ES (Evolution Storable, left) and ECA (Evolution Cryotechnique type A, right) versions of the Ariane 5 rocket. This launch system is used by the European Space Agency and the French space agency (CNES) to place satellites and other heavy payloads in Earth orbit. Ariane 5 launches, carried out by Arianespace, began in 1996. Over 50 successful launches have taken place since 1998. The ES configuration has been used since 2008 to launch the Automated Transfer Vehicles (ATVs) to the International Space Station. The ECA configuration has been used for satellite launches since 2002.
