Spektr-R space telescope launch. Zenit-3F rocket at launch site 45 (LC-45) at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, being used to launch the Russian Spektr-R radio space telescope. The space telescope is in the faring with the Fregat upper stage (top). This launch took place on 18 July 2011, shortly after this photograph was taken. Spektr-R, part of the Radioastron programme, is studying objects in radio wavelengths with a resolution far higher than previous telescopes. This high resolution is achieved by combining orbital observations with ground-based telescopes and using interferometry methods.
