Caption: Protein crystal nucleants. Researcher working with molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) to promote the formation of protein crystals to allow structural analysis. MIPs are a new type of material, developed by researchers at Imperial College, London, UK, with recent results published in 2011. The nucleant action is due to MIPs binding around the protein molecules encouraging further crystallisation. Unlike other nucleants, MIPs can be designed for specific proteins. Obtaining good protein crystals (as shown on the screen in the background) is essential for the accurate structural analysis needed to design new drugs.
